Mayor is a documentary portrait of Musa Hadid, who is the charismatic, much-loved title holder Palestine’s de facto capital, Ramallah. With a combination of indefatigability and charm, he tends to the many small-scale problems that come with administrating his city. He has high ambitions for Ramallah, but hauling any ancient city into the future is hard and Hadid has some additional problems. For example: being under the occupation of the illegal Israeli settlements that surround the city and the (then) president of the United States suddenly announcing the country’s embassy is moving to Jerusalem – just 15 kilometres away from Ramallah. David Osit’s film is at once an Armando Ianucci-esque farce and a you-are-there portrait of the real-life, human-level effects of a conflict we often only consider at a geopolitical level.
