Watch moreJoin spatial designer and educator Sarah Burrell for a panel discussion that invites you to reimagine monuments and other markers of public memory in the city. Together we will examine what narratives are perpetuated by monumentality and what counter-narratives exist that can be used as tools to reframe the present.
In the past year there have been major upheavals within the social and political ecologies of cities. This has prompted a reckoning with history and as part of that, an examination of the role of monuments and statues in public spaces and what they mean to different groups of people. Rather than valorising monolithic and overarching historical narratives, this session asks: how might we make monuments that resonate locally, personally, and celebrate unseen histories of place?
Panelists will explore the possibilities and power of alternative forms of monumentality and commemorative practices, in shared urban spaces.
