In recent years, the city of Hong Kong has seen millions of demonstrators take to the streets in an unprecedented denunciation of the government, the police, and the erosion of a ‘one country, two systems’ system. Among the many notable features of the protests has been the emergence of a new generation of activists for whom online media, tactical organisation, public pedagogy and visual culture have been key to their cause.
In this panel, a group of arts workers, academics and researchers with a connection to Hong Kong discuss the affective, performative and communicative aspects of Hong Kong’s protests and activism, exploring how new models of the social and the creative have emerged across both the virtual and embodied worlds.
