Australia is one of the most urbanised countries in the world, with around 90% of its human population living in urban areas. Our cities are changing fast, and shaping communities that are good for both people and nature requires new ways of thinking and doing.

The Clean Air and Urban Landscapes (CAUL) Hub, funded by the Australian Government’s National Environmental Science Program, is taking a comprehensive view of the sustainability and liveability of urban areas. Over the last five years, its research activities have focused on the central question of how to make cities better for people and other urban dwellers. So, in the final year of research for the Hub, what did they learn?

In this event, a panel of five leading experts discuss the ways their work is making a real impact on the future of Australian cities. These experts will reflect on the multi-disciplinary perspectives of CAUL Hub’s urban research, considering the air we breathe, the built infrastructure of cities, urban greening, biodiversity conservation, and solutions to environmental challenges that can be found in nature itself. And in considering these questions around shaping sustainable urban environments, Indigenous knowledge systems—developed over thousands of generations—will be central to the conversation.
