For those who want to feel good. Top End Wedding, directed by Wayne Blair (The Sapphires), has a deft touch with the familiar grooves of the romantic comedy form. Lauren (Miranda Tapsell) gets a promotion on the same day her boyfriend Ned (Gwilym Lee) gets fired. He conceals that fact, proposes marriage anyway and we’re all set up for some hijinks, laughs and tears. But the film skips out of those grooves even if it arrives at the same heartwarming destination as its romcom forbears. Lauren’s journey takes her to the Tiwi Islands in search of reconciliation with her AWOL mother and a disconnection from her indigenous heritage. A film of deep compassion and warmth.
