From Narrm on Kulin lands, Maylene is a singer-songwriter, freethinker and grassroots worker exploring conversations about identity, connection, disconnection and vulnerability. Through her parents, Maylene is part of the Kamilaroi, Wiradjuri, Kuku Djungan, Nywaigi and Gangalidda First Nations of so-called ‘Australia’.
Presenting a performance of original soft ballads, accompanied by the piano, Maylene’s storytelling and music touches on her healing journey, love, grief, hope, family and connection. Supported by song man Pirritu, a proud Wangaaypuwan mayi of the Ngiyampaa clan, this is a space where vulnerability is favoured as a strength – not a weakness. Maylene Slater-Burns is the recipient of the International Women’s Day First Peoples Emerging Artist Fellowship supported by Helen Marcou from Bakehouse Studios and Briggs from Bad Apples Music. This is the third year MPavilion has supported this fellowship.
