Jarra Karalinar Steel

Jarra Karalinar Steel is a Multidisciplinary artist. Recently graduated with a Master of Arts (Art in public spaces) from RMIT 2020. A Graduate from The University of Melbourne / Victorian College of the Arts ( Graduating in 2015) with a Bachelor of Production; Costume and Prop Design being her main focus of studies.
Growing up in Melbourne’s North surrounded by the Melbourne artist community from a young age sparked a love for all the creative arts. Jarra describes herself as a multi-disciplinary artist and is known for her powerful poster art, large scale public installations, Digital/Augmented Reality Art, Emu egg engravings, RAP artwork and commemorative signage.
Jarra is of Boon Wurrung, Wemba Wemba, English and Scottish descent. Jarra is a passionate advocate/consultant for Self-Representation of Victorian First Peoples Art and Culture and making sure it is kept alive and thriving. Jarra set up and ran Space 32 in 2013, a community creative arts-hub based in South Yarra. Space 32 was set up with the help of the Boon Wurrung Foundation and Stonnington Council. After running successful events and workshops. Sadly the lease came to an end in 2015.
Jarra has spent the last 15 plus years independently traveling on and off around the world, visiting art and design cultural hubs. In 2016 she spent a year in Paris, France on a cultural exchange where she spent her time building my skills and gathering inspiration from my travels. Jarra is currently the First Peoples Arts Officer at the City of Port Phillip following in the footprints of amazing first peoples artists, including her Cousin Maree Clarke who was the first Koorie Arts Officer in 1994.
